Valis - The Fantasm Soldier by mishihime Valis - The Fantasm Soldier by mishihime
This is a fake animation cel of Yuuko Asou, the hero of an obscure video game series from the late 80's called "Valis". I guess you could consider her a 'magical girl'. In the games, she is an ordinary Japanese schoolgirl that is summoned by a legendary sword (also named Valis) to fight evil in another world. Instead of the anime style this character is usually seen in, I've drawn her in a western (or American) fantasy style. After all, there were a lot of video game characters that got their own cartoon (Zelda, Captain N, etc.) so it's fun to imagine what Valis might have looked like. I tried to go for a 90's Saturday morning cartoon / Disney look, which is a bit unusual for me... so I hope you enjoy this.

This is so cool! I liked how you took inspiration from the Japanese computer versions Valis 2. I also like how you did Yuko/Yuuko's face.

Thank you very much. : D
The face is not in my usual style but I'm very proud of how it turned out.

Good work! :)
Above the belt should be skin, or was this on purpose?

Good question. Changing her bikini into a full dress was intentional. I figured that if there were an actual animated series for kids, the character designers would probably do something like this to censor her sex appeal like this. It's not too far off from canon though, on the cover artwork for Valis II she is seen wearing bikini armor with a toga like dress 4nabs.com/upload/local44/80amp… so it works out.

Yes, the series has a little too much sex appeal at times. It certainly didn't boost Yuko's popularity as they hoped... If someone wants to watch hentai, they aren't going to play a action adventure video game. They are just going to buy a movie or a dating sim / visual novel type of game. Had they removed some of the sexy parts, Valis could have been marketed towards older kids. A wider market would definitely mean more sales but oh well... too late now. >_<

Which is why they didn't bring the Original version but instead got the Turbo Duo version which is a nice change.
